What are the Big Three in astrology?

Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born, traditionally linked with your core identity. Your Moon sign is the Moon’s sign, linked with your emotional needs. Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth, linked with how you meet the world.

Why do I need my birth time and place?

The rising sign changes about every two hours, and depends on where you were born, so it needs both. The Moon changes sign every two to three days; without a birth time, we show both possible Moon signs if it changed sign on your birthday. The Sun sign needs only the date, unless you were born near the edge of a sign.

How accurate is this calculator?

Positions are calculated with standard astronomical methods (Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms) and historical time zones, accurate to a small fraction of a degree, which is enough for signs except within minutes of a sign change. Birthplaces come from GeoNames: towns of about 15,000 people or more. Choose the nearest one; a few kilometres make little difference.

Is astrology scientific?

No. Astrology is a symbolic tradition, and studies have not found that birth signs describe personality or predict events. Here your signs are offered as prompts for reflection: notice what resonates, and set aside what does not.

Is my birth information private?

Yes. Your date, time, and place of birth are used only in this browser tab and are never sent or stored. To find your birthplace, the page loads the list of towns that start with the same letter from this site; your exact place is never sent.
