How a Lenormand reading works

Lenormand cards are read like short sentences. In a line, each card is read together with its neighbour: the first card is the subject and the second describes it. The Rider next to the Letter, for example, suggests news in writing. In an odd-numbered line, the centre card is the heart of the matter.

How do you read a nine-card box?

The nine-card box is a 3 × 3 square. The centre card is the heart of the matter. The top row shows what is on your mind, the middle row where you stand, and the bottom row what you can build on; each row reads from what is behind you on the left to what lies ahead on the right. The four corners frame the whole picture.

What is the Lenormand Grand Tableau?

The Grand Tableau is the traditional “big picture” spread: all 36 cards laid out, here in four rows of nine. You choose the Man or the Woman card to stand for you, whatever your gender, and read the cards around it: what touches it, what lies behind and ahead, above and below, and how near the other person card falls.

What are the houses in a Grand Tableau?

Each position in the tableau is also a “house” named after a card: the first position is the house of the Rider, the second the house of the Clover, and so on to the Cross. A card in a house takes on a note of that house’s theme, so the Heart in the house of the Ship can suggest feelings at a distance. Tap any card in your tableau to read it in its house.

What is a Lenormand deck?

The Lenormand is a 36-card deck named after Marie Anne Lenormand, a famous French fortune-teller who died in 1843. The deck itself grew out of a German card game from around 1800, and its simple pictures (the Rider, the Clover, the Ship, and so on) each carry a traditional, everyday meaning.

How is Lenormand different from tarot?

Tarot has 78 symbolic cards often read one at a time for inner reflection. Lenormand has 36 plainer cards about everyday matters, and its meaning comes from combinations: cards are rarely read alone.

Can a Lenormand reading predict the future?

No. Lenormand was historically used for fortune-telling, but nothing shows that cards can predict events. Here the traditional meanings are offered as prompts for reflection on your situation. Your choices remain your own.

What do the small playing cards in the corners mean?

Many Lenormand decks show a playing-card inset on each card, such as the nine of hearts on the Rider. It reflects the deck’s origin in a card game and is used by some readers as an extra layer of meaning. This reading focuses on the pictures.
